CHILDREN ON THE MOVE: MIGRANT CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN ASIA

Overview:
Children and youth comprise an increasing segment of people on the move. According to UNICEF (2012), approximately 33 million international migrants, or 16% of the total migrant population, are under the age of 20. Among these, middle and late adolescents (15-19 yrs.) represent the largest group of young migrants in 2012.
Nevertheless, the involvement of children and youth in cross-border migration has been given little attention when compared to that of adults. Children have, for a long time, featured only marginally in the study of migration and have remained hidden within larger groups such as families and households or studied in their role of those left behind.
Considering the social, psychological and legal importance of age, the migration experiences of children and youth – as well as the relationship between cross-border mobility and young age- merit a discussion in their own right. How and why does age matter in migration? What age-related challenges, or advantages, do young migrants face? How does cross-border migration influence the wellbeing of children and youth? What are the various motives and routes that underpin children’s cross-border journeys? How do young migrants fare in their host societies? How can and do host societies respond to the influx of minors who may often be of schooling age, and what mechanisms are there to respond to children who arrive unaccompanied?

This workshop aims at bringing together scholars whose work relates to migrant children and youth within the Asian region. We encourage the submission of papers discussing one or more of the above mentioned questions within Asian contexts.
