Film Title: “Dreams of Dutiful Daughters” directed by Dr. Khin Mar Mar Kyi

Dreams of Dutiful Daughters’ is a powerful and inspirational film by Dr. Khin Mar Mar Kyi about the experiences of young Burmese women who cross the border with dreams to support their families back home in Burma. They become the most vulnerable group, facing exploitation, violence, sexual and racial discrimination in Thailand, as a consequence of their precarious illegal status. It weaves together stories of courage and quiet tenacity, forcefully demonstrating the unusual and exceptional qualities of the human spirit.

This award winning film is the outcome of Dr Mar’s many years of experience working with vulnerable Burmese communities in sensitive and complex political environments where violence, poverty and substance abuse are common. The film is considered an evocative ‘bench-mark film’ on Burma. It has strong potential to have an effect in the wider world.

Dr Khin Mar Mar Kyi is the winner of the ‘excellence in gender research’ award. She is the Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Gender Research Fellow at International Gender Studies Centre at Lady Margaret Hall at the University of Oxford.
