研究テーマ

  1. Siam in the late Ayutthaya period
  2. Thai literature and its regional connections
  3. Social and political change in modern Thailand
I’m trying to write an economic and social history of pre-modern Siam, concentrating on the late Ayutthaya period (17th and 18th centuries AD). As a spinoff from this project, Pasuk and I translated and recently published the great Thai-language folk epic, The tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen, which tells a wonderful story set against a panorama of the society. This has spun into a side-project about the inter-connections between literary traditions in Mainland Southeast Asia.
At the same time, we’re still involved in analyzing the extraordinary changes underway in contemporary Thailand.

アカデミック・キャリア

I taught Asian history and politics at the University of Cambridge in the 1970s, then moved to Thailand and went to work in business. I continued to research and write, but held no academic post, and taught only occasionally.
