About Sato Collection
Takizo Sato was a professional photographer. After joining the Japanese
Army during the World War II, he frequently visited Southeast Asian countries.
Exploring untouched areas, he was particularly interested in pristine nature,
unique culture and dairy lives of local people. He published "Indonesia
no Minzoku Bunka" (Ethnic Culture of Indonesia) (Yuzankaku Shuppan
1986). His photos often appeared on magazines such as "Asahi Graph"
and "The Status". After he passed away, his family donated his
photos to CSEAS in 1998. Sato wished that his photos should be used for
research and education of Southeast Asia. CSEAS officially accepted the
donation after evaluating them. They include 20,000 slides, 15,000 prints
and 10,000 negatives and cover the areas mainly in Indonesia, the Philippines
and the South Pacific Ocean. CSEAS digitalized almost of all these photos.
Taking this opportunity, we decided to have his photos open to the public
on our website as “Sato Collection”. The collection is categorized by area
where photos were acquired according to Sato’s records. We hope “Sato Collection”
will make some contribution in various way academically and educationally.
We express our sincere gratitude to the late Mr. Sato and his family to
give us an opportunity to introduce his precious photos in our website.
